The Four Elements

Fire, water, earth and air-these are the four powerful elements. The balancing act between the four could act as a framework for a successful sense of self.

Fire
Flamboyantly taking life by the horns by passionately giving your best on every scale

Water
Experiencing heartache and despair by transforming it from a whirlpool to a waterfall of possibility

Earth
Respecting Mother Nature by giving back to the environment. Nurturing the ruins we created

Air
Breathing in the fresh air of the future, fuelling the fire which pushes us forward in making a change

By combining all these elements, I can imagine a fifth element. Get in touch with your senses and explore things differently.

It’s a poor idea to lie to yourself...

Image obtained from thoughtfullysimple

You know yourself the best! You know about that lovely custard donut hiding behind the olive jar in the fridge... you know you are going to eat that kilojoule-drenched goodness...

Since we were growing up, we learnt that lying is socially unacceptable. The truth always slides off the tongue and is captured by the heart.

When lying to yourself, the scale of truth tilts and recommends that you lay off the custards and creams. Lying to yourself will turn you in your own worst enemy.

The sound of one hand clapping

A Short Story by S.M. Cerff

Image obtained from bestfurnitures.org

The cheering grows louder as she puts down the blusher on her dressing table. Humming, she brings the metronome to a halt. An old wrinkly reflection stares back at her. She exhales a deep breath and exits her dressing room decorated with red, pink and white roses.

The roaring increases as she approaches the stage. Her silky golden dress delicately follows her, gliding elegantly with every step she takes. The lights are blinding her, men and women are whistling, cheering and flowers are neatly thrown at her feet. The lights create a silhouette of her as she takes her final bow.

Everything goes silent except the sound of one hand clapping. The crowd disappear together with the delicate flowers on the stage. The silky dress transforms to an old knitted black coat. In the distance she sees one man smilingly looking at her. Blushingly, she cripples off the stage and slams the backstage door shut.

Not all who wander are lost

Image obtained from morealtitude.wordpress.com

We are playing hide and seek with reapers. When exhaling your last breath, a wonderful/terrible journey awaits. The “knight” gently leads us by the hand.

We are all playing the game on a black and white chequered carpet. Choices influence our end-game and like a whiff of dust, we reached the metaphorical “finishing line”.  The Horseman of Death does not wander far behind...

Our choices push and pull us over the chessboard earth. Not all who wander are lost. Hide and seek; even after the king has fallen.

The “Easter Bunny”, “Tooth Mouse/Fairy” and “Father Christmas”

Remember those bizarre stories/characters which your parents/guardians told you when you were a toddler?  Easter is coming up and it started the slippery slope of my childhood memories.

The “Easter Bunny”

Honestly, why did they tell me that there is a human sized bunny hopping amongst us, dropping/hiding chocolatey goodness, such as easter eggs, in the garden? As a child, I could not wait for the “egg hunt”, but imagine seeing this monstrosity?  Psychology sessions for a lifetime!

 The “Tooth Mouse/Fairy”

This is absolutely terrifying. These creatures enter your room, AT NIGHT, and in exchange for a tooth, they leave some coins (or notes if you are lucky). This sounds like a plot from the gruesome and cleverly thought out horror film SAW.

My experience with the “Tooth Mouse” came to a halting end when I stayed awake and created a booby-trap for this tooth stealing thief.  Unfortunately, my dad suffered minor injuries.

 “Father Christmas”

This was a terrifying experience when a man wearing a moth eaten beard together with an unflattering red suit, entered our home. He had a black bag over his shoulder. Obviously I thought it was a burglar! Screaming, I ran down the passage and hid under the bed until my mom revealed the true identity of this man.

*                                                  *                                              *

All these mythical characters are all good and well, but for a child with an overactive imagination, these characters are horrifying!  (Trust me!) Maybe it is better to tell the truth to your children/younger relatives.....or at least get the message across of the actual meaning of the event, like Easter for example.

Happy “egg hunting” I guess!
