Why I have conversations?

Image obtained from traemcneely.com

The very first word which came to mind was storytelling. Remember how you and your best friend got to know each other? Let me share my tale...

The year was 2004 at the high school tennis courts during first break. My friend and I ate our homemade sandwiches (very nerdy). A group of girls, opposite us, were also enjoying their break gossiping and giggling; everyone except one. This young lady was running around, picking yellow flowers and naming them ‘Dandelion’. This reference is from Ice Age 1.

Second break, Miss Dandelion took out her lunchbox on the same spot. The other girls ran away from her and left her by herself. Miss Dandelion was very upset and heartbroken; although I invited her to come and sit with us. Her face lightened up and from that day on, we named yellow flowers ‘Dandelion’ till this very day.

We both identified with a story, Ice Age which shaped the foundation of our friendship. This story was the very being of a lifetime of stories written and still to come. Storytelling is an art which have been with us since the beginning of time. What is your story? Post a comment and we can find out!

To Auntie Charmaine: Live, Love, Dance

Picture by Kelly & Bernice Bryce, 2012

Nineteen years ago you took on many life changing moulding projects. A modern dancing class filled with 3 & 4 year olds: undisciplined, unbearable, unconfident- not for long I must add! All of us were put in line as soon as our mothers/guardians left the studio. Thus, my first memory leads to this day where I skipped in a circle with a bunch of hyper active young ladies.

“Point your toes or I’ll chop them off and hang them on the washing line!’ she said. A tough lady with a warm heart always wearing her black heels. I still do not understand how she moved with us wearing those shoes!?

Auntie Charmaine, you were always there for each and every dancing competition and showcase. Before we jumped onto the stage, you gave us a little pat on the bottom enhancing a sense of pride and happiness. When the enthusiasm after a doing a solo came to the last set of eight counts, you were on the opposite side catching us with a hug.

“I am going to place a broomstick behind your back. Straighten it!”

During exams, you were always calming our nerves with funny jokes and somehow I always had my costume on backwards. I remembered that these incidents always placed a smile on your face. There was no chance of getting out of our costumes picked by Auntie Charmaine. Beware if you were chewing gum or danced around with lose hair in her class...BIG TROUBLE!

I remember when Monique (daughter) stood in for you when you were getting older. How amazed I was at how beautifully and elegantly she moved on the floor. I also remember your shocking facial expression when my dad picked me up from dancing- a small world since you and him attended the same school!

Nineteen years has past and I am still in your studio. I can tell that each and every girl in the senior group misses you. With every step, jump or kick we take, the instilled disciplines come to show. There is a part of you in each and every one of us. You made all the girls fall in love with dancing; a special and personal experience. You moulded us into who we are: disciplined, confident and proud.

You will always have a special place in our hearts. It is imprinted within all of us until we see you again.

Zooey Deschanel: Role Model

Image obtained from talksupe.files.wordpress.com

What a beautiful and talented lady! I am not completely star struck but come on, not only is she a talented actress but a musician and singer-songwriter as well! Since I live in South Africa, Cape Town it took me awhile to gain access to one of the films she stared in: 500 Days of Summer

Also, I started watching the new television hit series New Girl and I need to share this with the world: I adore Zooey Deschanel’s character and wardrobe selection. For some reason I feel that I could relate to her character (Jess) since I am stuck with a retainer in my mouth for 5 weeks at the age of 22. I never thought (in a billion years) that I would EVER look up to a celebrity and dub them as my ‘role model’.

Ladies and gents, the time has come and I can proudly announce that Zooey Deschanel is indeed my role model (or should I say the character she portrays in New Girl?). A positive character never shying away for who and what she is- okay maybe I am a little star struck...

PS. Whoever buys her wardrobe (wardrobe lady/gent on film set), it will be an honour to go shopping with you (and curtsy).

Accidents

Image obtained from vimeocdn.com

Watch your back! I witnessed a terrible experience nearly a week ago which took place on the highway. I cannot shake the images off which I saw; thus this is a psychological diary entry.

When I see blue lights flickering on a highway at night, my thoughts immediately associates it with a roadblock. It was 22:00 on a Friday evening. Miserable weather and we were stuck in traffic- this is a very unlikely sentence.

As we approached the scene, we saw a white car lying on its back crumbled up like an apology letter. Ambulances entered the scene assisting the injured. Not 10 meters further, another vehicle was turned on its back...on fire! More police officers, ambulances and firemen surrounded the scenes.

The image of young people crying, being in shock and frantically phoning their loved ones together with the setting is something I will never forget. So please, whoever you are, please be careful and watch your back no matter what.

My big fat BIG dream

Image obtained from 1.bp.blogspot.com

Everybody has one of those: the dream wedding, the perfect score, and a sexy sports car.  All legitimate dreams but achievable. My BIG fat BIG dream is a bit more complicated: World Peace. First things first, I am not trying to win Miss World or some kind of spray tan beauty pageant. I am just against unnecessary fighting to the degree of warfare and violence.

Think about it, in this day and age one would think countries have learnt from past mistakes and matured. On the contrary; one country wants something from another state but like two kids fighting over the colour clay they want to play with, spite and malice pushes for World War 3, 4 and 5 to break out.

Instead of demolishing the beauty we live in, we should cherish it. Nuclear weaponry and combat IS NOT going to solve the problem; it will just make it worse. Act like adults and respect Mother Nature. Let’s try to live in peace- that is my big fat big dream. A bit more complicated than a wedding, isn’t it?
