Superstition

Image obtained from img3.etsystatic.com

I am semi superstitious. Why? You would never find me walking underneath a ladder! Balance is key to maintain your superstitious beliefs, otherwise your life would pan out something like this:

Exiting your home, you cross paths with a black cat. Out of fear, you run to your destination and slip through underneath a ladder.  You realise it is Friday the 13th. On the bus, you decide to powder your nose only to find that your pocket mirror is cracked.

Finally, you arrive at your destination and make a cup of steamy hot coffee. As you reach for the sugar, you accidently bump over the salt. The day has not even started, but you are carried out by a male nurse whilst wearing a strait jacket.

Anything and everything can be transformed into a superstition, but do not let it get the best of you. Please, just avoid walking underneath ladders...you never know what might happen!

Try a cliché

Commercial love stories are stories which we have not seen the ending to...Those American blockbusters are too surreal.  Have it occurred to you that everything seems to fall in place at exactly the appropriate time within these fictional spaces?

Where have you ever seen that throwing pebbles to a girl’s window has ever worked? Romeo, Juliet’s parents will call the police and have you arrested-well in South Africa in anyways. Besides, playing guitar outside her window whilst singing a love song will only wake her up and put her in a bad mood!

The ‘hero’ always gets the girl. Look at 007 for instance; a man in his mid 40s seems to swoop all the young ladies off their feet. Let alone, the women are young enough to be his daughter! Yes, Indiana Jones also falls under this category.

The hundreds of roses being delivered to your doorstep would, in real life, only be an obsessive stalker trying to lure you out.  Then again, these cliché’s have been used in films repeatedly and it still sells...

I am not going to lie...but the film 10 Things I Hate about You, remains a guilty pleasure. (Sigh) if only reality was so simple.

Human Trafficking

Modern slave trade-comes to show that history is repeating itself.  Slave trade has evolved to modern form of slave trade; although technology and globalisation made it much easier for syndicates to conduct their $7 billon ‘businesses’.

These business women and men play tricks with your vulnerabilities. Promising a new live filled with materialistic objects together with a successful career, leads to a life of pain, insecurity and misfortune. After throwing the bait of empty promises, they lure you away from your community and family...FOREVER. You become a pawn in their evolving business of sex-trade.

They take your identification documents and passport as soon as you arrive in the ‘city of dreams’. You become an illegal immigrant and more reliant on your ‘agent’. You are trapped since the authorities would deport you or in worst case scenario, send you back to your trafficker since some authorities are polluted with criminals.

Human rights are violated since women are forced into prostitution. They are raped, beaten and hooked on any imaginable drug. They are selling their bodies, their dignity, to pay back the ‘agent’ who lured them into the life of rainbows and unicorns. They also need to feed their addiction and in some cases, send money back home to the family.

Once you had the world at you feet filled with opportunities and laughter. Now you are left trying to pick-up and find the broken pieces of your shattered life. Ladies and gentlemen, this is a reality. We need to combat this issue. If this was acknowledged and baby steps were taken during the past, modern day slavery would have been easier to battle.

Let’s start taking baby steps to a brighter future without human trafficking.
